New Pride content is coming to Overwatch 2

Posted on May 31, 2023

With Pride month coming in hot, it’s only right that our favourite games give us ways to represent our identities in-game! Overwatch 2 has been ahead of the curve for a while with its highly diverse roster so it shouldn’t come as a surprise to see them leaning into the spirit of pride this June.

Overwatch 2 might have just scaled back the plans for PvE content but it’s fantastic to see them further committing to new, broader cosmetics for the player base.

From June 1, everybody who logs into Overwatch 2 on PC and Consoles will receive an extensive swag of fresh pride icons and name cards! It looks as though there are no rainbow-clad skins though which for now is probably for the best. New accounts from now on will also automatically receive the cosmetics so players won’t need to worry about missing the chance to get them.

Overwatch will also be releasing a short story featuring Baptiste and Pharah that finally ends the speculation on their sexual orientations. The story is a tender nod to the subtleties of friendships between queer people and feels canonically on brand for the game’s story. I won’t lie, I’m craving the old short animated films they used to release as I feel like this content would play out so much better that way.

Overwatch has always been about allowing everyone the chance to play the way they want and the dev teams aim with this Pride content is an admirable one. The hope is to give players who can’t usually celebrate at real-world pride events for whatever reason representations of the festivities so they are still able to connect with their community.

Blizzard is also giving back to the community with a charity initiative featuring a curated collection of pride merch available on the Blizzard Gear Store. Net profits from the collection will be donated to the National Center for Transgender Equality, whose work to increase the understanding and acceptance of transgender people is needed more than ever.

Overwatch 2 is available free-to-play on PC and Consoles. Find out more here.
