Many were hoping for a new Mario game to be announced at the Nintendo Direct this morning, and those wishes have been answered, with a new 2D adventure for everybody’s favourite plumber, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, featuring his newest transformation… Elephant Mario.
The trailer gave us a lot to be excited about ahead of the game’s launch later this year. Check it out!
The key addition to the series is the Wonder Flower, an item that when you touch it, “the wonders of the world unlock”. We can see pipes coming alive, hordes of enemies appearing, or even characters changing their look entirely. It certainly seems trippy in the best way. The Wonder Flower is seaid to transform gameplay “in unpredictable ways”, and “excitement and different surprises await in each course”.
In Super Mario Bros. Wonder, you’ll be able to play as multiple different characters from the Mario franchise as well, including Luigi, Toad, Princess Peach, Princess Daisy and Yoshi. Additionally, Nintendo have decided that I need another animal to have an inapprorpiate crush on, as Mario’s newest power-up allows him to transform into Elephant Mario. Now we just need an Elephant Mario versus Bowser moment to really get me excited.
With the recent success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the sky is seemingly the limit for the mascot.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder launches for Nintendo Switch on 20th October.
