Bluey, the iconic and award-winning Australian animated show, beloved by families around the world, is finally getting his own video game. Bluey: The Videogame will be heading to PC and consoles later this year. The game is being published by BBC Studios and British publisher Outright Games, and developed by Artax Games, a development studio based in Spain. Considering that Bluey is such an iconic Australian IP, it is somewhat curious that a local developer wasn’t given development duties, however as BBC Studios owns the show’s global distribution and merchandising rights, it probably isn’t surprising that the game is being developed overseas.
Bluey: The Videogame follows the adventures of the loveable Bluey, as well as her sister Bingo, mum Chilli and dad Bandit. The game features faithfully recreated locations from the show, including Bluey’s house, which are now explorable for the first time in this interactive sandbox adventure. Players will engage in story-driven episodic gameplay while experiencing a brand-new four-part storyline created in partnership with Artax Games, BBC Studios and the show’s producers at Ludo Studio. The game’s Australian voice cast will also be reprising their roles in the game.
The game is playable solo, or with up to four players controlling members of Bluey’s family. The game will include many minigames inspired by the show such as ‘Keepy Uppy’ and ‘Magic Xylophone’, with new costumes, stickers, playable episodes, and locations able to be unlocked. Being an adaptation of a show aimed at pre-schoolers, Bluey: The Videogame will include a large variety of difficulty and accessibility options, such as UI on/off toggle, simple written on-screen instructions and full voice-over.
Stephanie Malham, COO of Outright Games said: “We’re incredibly excited to be working with BBC Studios as a brand-new licensing partner for Outright Games and to help expand the phenomenal world of Bluey into video games. It is always our goal to create games that can act as an entry point to the world of video games and to some of the most important entertainment franchises on the planet like Bluey. It’s a thrill for us to bring Bluey’s world to life with a level of interactivity that has never been seen before and by ensuring that the game is accessible and enjoyable for all ages we know fans across the globe will be delighted.”
“We’re delighted to be working with Outright Games on Bluey’s first video game,” commented Kevin Jorge, Head of Games at BBC Studios. “It’s very important for us to capture the essence of fun and games that is central to the series. We know fans will be excited to explore Bluey’s world and join in with the Heeler family’s antics.”
Bluey has a large worldwide fanbase who would get a lot out of a Bluey video game that can be enjoyed as a family. Fortunately for those fans, they don’t have too much longer to wait until it releases either. Bluey: The Videogame will be coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC on November 17th 2023.
