Epic Mickey Rebrushed, an enhanced remake of the 2010 Disney-themed Wii platformer, was announced during the recent Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase. This new version of the game will bring plenty of graphical and gameplay improvements and is developed by Purple Lamp Studios, the developer behind last year’s Spongebob Squarepants: The Cosmic Shake. Why the game, which focuses on the classic incarnation of Disney mascot Mickey Mouse, was not released or even announced last year to coincide with Disney’s 100th anniversary is anyone’s guess, however.
After an encounter with the powerful wizard Yen Sid (try spelling it backwards!), Disney Epic Mickey sees Mickey Mouse on a quest through the Wasteland to combat nightmarish ink monsters using a magic paintbrush and thinner. Throughout his adventure, Mickey also encounters other classic Disney characters, including the company’s original mascot Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. The player is also given multiple choices throughout the game which have an impact on the narrative, with multiple endings.
Disney Epic Mickey Rebrushed is not merely a straight port or lightly-upgraded remaster. As per the game’s Steam Store page, Mickey now has new movement abilities, including dashing, ground pounding and sprinting. One must assume as well, with the game no longer being exclusive to a console with one analogue stick, and manual control over the in-game camera will also be included.
There’s still yet to be confirmed regarding Disney Epic Mickey Rebrushed, including a firm release date. At any rate, fans of Disney animation history and cult classic Wii platformers have a lot to look forward to when the game releases on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S sometime in 2024.
