Big news Mario fans! In celebration of MAR 10 (Aka Mario Day), Nintendo has announced that production for The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 has already begun.
Nintendo’s game director and The Super Mario Bros. creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, and Illumination’s CEO, Chris Meledandri, presented this year’s MAR10 Day video, announcing that Nintendo and Illumination have started working on the Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s sequel. Both expressed excitement to bring the Mushroom Kingdom back to life, with Meledandri stating that the film is now in the storyboarding process. Meledandri also said that animation will begin soon, and fans can expect new sets and environments that will be featured in this animated film. Meanwhile, Miyamoto shared some details about the sequel’s potential plot, saying that they’re thinking about “broadening Mario’s world further” and that it will have a “bright and fun story.”
The Super Mario Bros Movie had an A-list cast, such as Chris Pratt, Jack Black, Charlie Day, and Anya Taylor-Joy, just to name a few. According to Box Office Mojo, the film earned over $1.3 billion USD in the global box office, making it the 2nd highest-grossing film in 2023, just under Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. It’s also the 16th highest-grossing film of all time, placed between Marvel Studio’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and Black Panther, and the highest-grossing video game film of all time. Miyamoto has promised that more information will be released once it’s ready.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 is scheduled to be released in U.S. theaters on April 3, 2026.
