It won’t be long until Freddy Fazbear and the gang return to the big screens. Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions have announced that a sequel for the Five Nights at Freddy’s Movie has been greenlit. The film adaptation of the popular indie horror game was a massive success when it was released in 2023, earning over $290 million USD (over $447 million AUD) in the global box office.
This announcement happened during CinemaCon, a movie convention that’s currently happening in Las Vegas. According to Deadline, Universal’s President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution, Jim Orr, has confirmed that the horror sequel is currently in production. However, plot details remain under wraps. There was also no news as to whether any of the original cast will be reprising their roles.
The Five Nights at Freddy‘s movie hit theatres and U.S. streaming platform, Peacock, in late October 2023. The film starred Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson as Mike Schmidt, Scooby Doo‘s Matthew Lillard as William Afton, and Once Upon A Time‘s Elizabeth Lail as Vanessa. The film also included YouTuber cameos, such as MatPat from Game Theory and Cory Williams. Just like the games, the film revolves around Mike working at an abandoned Pizaria that was once popular in the 80’s and realising that haunted animatronics reside in the torn-down venue. According to Rotten Tomatoes, it received a poor critics score of 32%. However, it was highly praised by fans, receiving an average audience score of 87%.
The Five Nights At Freddy‘s sequel is scheduled to hit theatres in 2025. Meanwhile, the first film is available for purchase both physically and digitally.
