One of the most exciting and surprising game reveals at the recent Xbox Game Showcase was ‘Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’. This unbelievably stylistic game is coming to us from newly formed studio Sandfall Interactive, a French-based developer with a focus on single-player and narrative-driven experiences. The game itself is a turn-based RPG and looks to borrow some ideas from some of the best games in the genre. The UI and visual pizzazz has Persona written all over it, whilst the reaction-based attacks and blocks are reminiscent of Paper Mario.
Perhaps even more fascinating is the story we’re presented in the game’s debut trailer. A being known as the ‘Paintress’ appears to be wiping out humanity one number at a time as people of a certain age vanish after the stroke of her brush. Every year an expedition is sent on the seemingly hopeless quest of ending the Paintress. You play as different members of Expedition 33, looking to break the cycle and bring an end to the Paintress.
I simply can’t get over the gameplay style. There’s an incredible power and fury to the combat, even as a turn-based game. Visually stunning and so very captivating, definitely check out the world premiere of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 below.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is coming to next-gen consoles and PC in 2025. You can check out their website for more information.
