Monty Python and the Holy Grail receives a 2 volume Magic: The Gathering collab

Posted on July 27, 2024

Magic: The Gathering has announced another iconic IP to be part of its next Secret Lair drop. This time, it’s the iconic 1975 comedy film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. This set is one of many films and TV shows part of Magic’s Universes Beyond sub-brand, and this comedic collection will be released just in time for San Diego Comic-Con.

According to IGN, Magic: The Gathering x Monty Python and the Holy Grail will contain two sets, with a total of 9 cards. Volume 1 will contain 5 cards while volume 2 will only contain 3 cards and a token. The cards that will be included in the collection are:

  • Sir Bedivere’s Scales (Ashnod’s Altar)
  • The Bridge of Death (Door to Nothingness)
  • Castle of Aaargh (Dark Depths)
  • The Black Beast of Aaargh (Marit Lage)
  • We Want… A SHRUBBERY (Three Visits)
  • Tim the Enchanter (Prodigal Sorcerer)
  • ‘Tis But a Scratch! (Dismember)
  • Bring Out Your Dead! (Buried Alive)
  • European Swallow & African Swallow (Birds of Paradise).

European Swallow & African Swallow will be a double-faced card, so fans can choose between which version they want to play with. Like many Secret Lair Drops, the set will come in both foil and non-foil releases.

MTG x Monthy Python and the holy grail

This isn’t the first time Magic: The Gathering referenced the comedy film in its sets. Back in 2019, Magic: The Gathering released Throne of Eldraine, a set that’s inspired by fairytales. The set featured a card called “Oathsworn Knight,” a black Human Knight card where +1/+1 counters can be removed to prevent damage to the creature. This is an obvious reference to The Black Knight (played by John Cleese), who gets his arms and legs chopped off during a duel with King Arthur. Now, this courageous knight will be officially commemorated in ‘Tis But a Scratch.

Magic: The Gathering has collaborated with numerous TV shows and films throughout the years. Other media IPs include The Walking Dead, Stranger Things, Arcane, Transformers, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, The Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who, and most recently Jurassic Park.

Magic: The Gathering x Monty Python and the Holy Grail will be released on July 29, 2024, both online and at the Hasbro Pulse booth at San Diego Comic-Con.
