Directive 8020 revealed as Supermassive Games next cinematic horror game

Posted on August 21, 2024

The Casting Of Frank Stone is just a few short weeks away but it seems Supermassive Games has already been cooking up their next cinematic horror game. In a trailer revealed at Gamescom, we got our first look at Directive 8020 – the first Supermassive Games experience to take place in space. Billed as “A Dark Pictures Game” it’s evident we’ll be holding on to the edge of our seats for this one. Take a peek at the trailer below!

“Earth is dying and humanity is running out of time. 12 light years from home, Tau Ceti f offers a small sliver of hope. When the colony ship Cassiopeia crash lands on the planet, its crew soon realize they are far from being alone. In space, death takes many forms.”

It looks like Directive 8020 is set to be extremely spooky! These games allow players to shape the narrative, with choices often leading to deadly consequences if you’re not careful. Supermassive Games has quite a catalogue of horror games (featuring Until Dawn, The Quarry, as well as four instalments from The Dark Pictures Anthology) so it’s no surprise that there are more spooks on the way from the studio.

Directive 8020 stars Lashana Lynch, who is known for her roles in Bob Marley: One Love, The Woman King, and as Marie Rambeau in Captain Marvel. She is venturing into the world of cinematic horror games with Supermassive Games, which is very exciting. The Dark Pictures Anthology is entering its second era of sorts: previous instalments in the series have featured famous actors such as Will Poulter, Shawn Ashmore, Ashley Tisdale, and Jessie Buckley.

As big lovers of horror movies and games, we’re excited for Directive 8020 to walk tall among sci-fi horror giants. With an alien capable of mimicking humans hunting the crew, it feels like this is the perfect storm of John Carpenter’s The Thing and Alien: Isolation – that lonely sci-fi setting is rich for cinematic horror experiences.

Directive 8020 has been given a release window of sometime next year.
