It’s been over a decade since the popular mobile game, Flappy Bird, was released. The game was up for only a year and was pulled from stores in 2014 due to the hate it received. Now, the game is coming back, but unfortunately, the game’s creator, Dong Nguyen, says he’s not involved in the project, nor does he support it.
Over on Twitter/X, Nguyen released a short statement about Flappy Bird’s return. He revealed that he didn’t sell the rights to the game, nor has any relation to it. The post also stated that he doesn’t support crypto in video games. The 2024 Flappy Bird’s website has no mentions of crypto and NFTs. However, Forbes reported that in the game files, there’s some sort of “crypto-play” by the company involved and may feature the works of Web 3.0 artists, developers, and creators. In addition, the rumours surrounding the game stem from various allegations made on social media, more specifically through Twitter’s Community Notes.
No, I have no related with their game. I did not sell anything.
I also don't support crypto.— Dong Nguyen (@dongatory) September 15, 2024
Flappy Bird is making its return after Gametech Holdings filed to have the game’s trademark declared as abandoned. According to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, this occurred in late September 2023, and by January 2024, the game’s trademark no longer belonged to the Vietnamese game developer and was given to this LLC. In addition, Nguyen said he never sold the IP in 2014. According to the new Flappy Birds website, there were no mentions of crypto and NFTs. However, it revealed that the game will have new characters and modes. The game’s trailer was released last week, where it shared a glimpse of what’s to come, such as new pipe designs, birds, and a game map.
Since its release in 2013, Flappy Bird became infamous due to how it made many people frustrated when playing the game. The mobile arcade game had a simple premise: ensure the bird goes through a never-ending obstacle course by not hitting the pipes through simple taps on your phone. Due to its immense popularity, The Verge reported that the game generated over $50,000 USD (~ $74,000 AUD) a day due to its in-game advertising. In February 2014, Nguyen announced that Flappy Bird would be removed from digital stores. Since the release of Flappy Bird, dotGears released a handful of other mobile games, including Swing Copters, Ninja Spinki Challenges, and Boop.
The Flappy Bird remake will hit telegram on October 2024 and will be available for Android and iOS in 2025.
