Metaphor: ReFantazio has sold 1 million copies at launch

Metaphor: ReFantazio is not just a fantastic game as far as critical reception is concerned, it is also selling impressively well. So well, that it has become ATLUS’ fastest-selling game in the company’s history, having sold one million copies on just its first day of launch. This eclipses its previous fastest-selling game, Persona 3: Reload, which took a week to reach the one million sales mark.

As per a post on social media, the official English-language ATLUS account confirmed that Metaphor ReFantazio has sold over one million copies worldwide within its first day of launch. This milestone is commemorated with some original art of the game’s mascot character Gallica celebrating the game’s sales figures and thanking fans for their support.

Considering Metaphor: ReFantazio is an original IP, without the familiar branding of the celebrated Persona series to rely upon (and with a rather unwieldy, nondescript title at that), it’s a rather impressive feat. On the other hand, the incredibly glowing reviews which came out a few days before launch can’t have hurt the game’s chances, nor could built-up goodwill from Persona fans who were looking forward to the new game due to the developer’s pedigree, despite its unusual premise.

Regardless, one million sales at launch is a sign that fans are seemingly as keen towards the game as the critics have been. We will have to wait and see what additional sales milestones the game hits, and how soon ATLUS and SEGA are likely to capitalise on the game’s financial success with the announcement of additional content or a sequel in early development.
