Giant Sparrow, the developer of What Remains of Edith Finch, has revealed a few tantalising details about its next game. Ian Dallas, the creator and creative director of the studio, recently spoke to the New York Times about his development process and inspirations, and during that interview, he dropped a few clues about what the game will be and its themes.
Apparently, the yet-unannounced game is about field biology, where players will discover and study both mundane and fantastical wildlife. According to Dallas, the game’s premise is inspired by the strangeness of biology, and some specific works like Spirited Away, Ico, Windosill, and even the nature documentaries of David Attenborough. This is reiterated on Giant Sparrow’s website, which says that the game’s focus is on “exploring the wonders and horrors of biology”. As the game is not ready for an official announcement, all we have are some concept images to go on, but it definitely matches the descriptors of both wonderful and horrible.
Giant Sparrow doesn’t have many games under its belt. Its most well-known game, What Remains of Edith Finch, received critical acclaim and multiple awards, including Best Narrative during the 2017 Game Awards. Even after more than 5 years, it’s still touted as one of the best indie games ever made, especially in the genre of “walking sims” or even just narrative games in general. When this new game is announced, many eyes will be watching.
