Arcane, the acclaimed animated series based on Riot Games’ League of Legends and produced by animation studio Fortiche and Netflix, has now ended with its second season. However, Riot Games’ plans for League of Legends spin-offs are not stopping there. In fact, Arcane’s showrunner, Christian Linke, has confirmed that three new animated shows based on the hit multiplayer game are in the works. Arcane won Best Adaptation at the 2022 Game Awards, and at time of writing boasts a “Universal Acclaim” average from both critics and users on review aggregator site Metacritic.
In an interview with streamer Necrit94, Linke confirmed that an Arcane “cinematic universe” is in development. “Noxus, Ionia, and Demacia are getting shows and are [the] next steps in this cinematic universe,” he stated in the interview. “We’re far from done, we’re really going wide, we’re looking at every region and we really now have the ability to build a slate to tell new stories and continue others.”
During the interview, Linke acknowledged that one of the three series in development has been in pre-production for the past year. League of Legends has a wealth of characters who haven’t yet appeared in Arcane. With Arcane itself setting up many of these other locations which will be focused on in the spin-off shows, there are multiple directions this League of Legends animated series universe could go. That said, considering it took three whole years for Arcane to receive its second and final season, we should probably not expect any formal announcements of additional shows anytime soon.
The entirety of Arcane’s final season is currently streaming on Netflix.
