It’s finally happening! Nintendo has officially unveiled the Nintendo Switch 2, set to launch in 2025, and we’re buzzing with excitement. The announcement came alongside a slick first-look trailer that showcases the next chapter in Nintendo’s iconic console history. We can’t wait to (hopefully!) get our hands on it soon.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is designed to maintain compatibility with both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, ensuring your current library has a home on the new console. However, certain Nintendo Switch 1 games may not be supported or fully compatible with the Switch 2. Nintendo plans to share additional details on these compatibility issues on their website at a later date.
Beyond this, the Switch 2 will host an exciting lineup of exclusives and promises to push boundaries in power, performance, and design. More details will be unveiled during the “Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2” on 2 April 2025.
Nintendo is hosting Nintendo Switch 2 Experience events around the globe, giving fans the chance to go hands-on with the console before it hits shelves. For us in Australia, the event lands in Melbourne on 10-11 May 2025. This is the prime opportunity to be among the first to experience the Nintendo magic. Ticket registration starts soon, so make sure your Nintendo Account is ready to go!
The original Nintendo Switch, launched in March 2017, was a game-changer—literally. With its innovative hybrid design, the Switch revolutionised how we play games, giving us the flexibility to dive into our favourite titles both on the go and on the couch. Over the years, Nintendo graced us with various iterations the Switch Lite (2019) and Switch OLED (2021), both sleek upgrades, the latter with a vivid OLED screen, better sound, and improved portability.
The Switch sold over 140 million units worldwide, becoming one of the best-selling consoles in history and a platform for some of the greatest games ever, from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
The Checkpoint Gaming team is already debating what launch titles might look like. The Nintendo Switch changed the way we game; the Switch 2 could very well do it again.
