Inspired by Romanian folklore, heavy metal and the surreal horror of the works of David Lynch, Moroi has been revealed as an upcoming dark fantasy isometric hack and slasher. Developed by Violet Saint and published by Dicefolk and Monster Train publisher Good Shepherd Entertainment, Moroi sees you playing as an amnesiac warrior as they must escape a hellish labyrinth called the Cosmic Engine while uncovering the secrets which lurk behind the mysterious world in which you have awoken. The game’s reveal trailer can be found here.
Awakening in a mysterious maze called the Cosmic Engine, your character awakens without any memory of their name or past. In order to escape and gain some answers, you must employ a variety of melee and ranged weapons and fight your way to freedom against hordes of mages, undead and spider monsters, among other foes. Your arsenal isn’t exactly conventional, either: players can hack their way through their enemies a Chainsword or Power Hammer, or by carving through them with the teeth of a hellish duck. For ranged foes, you can replace your entire arm with a fully functioning cannon or shoot at foes with the help of a flying brain. Players are encouraged to mix and match to find the build that best suits their playstyle.
In addition to combat challenges, Moroi has no shortage of puzzles to solve in order to escape the Cosmic Engine. Not unlike the unusual weaponry, Moroi promises something more…bizarre than the standard sliding block puzzles. In line with the surreal horror theme, Moroi’s puzzles often require macabre and creative solutions involving acts like drinking blood and scavenging through innards in order to progress.
Moroi certainly looks unusual, however the surreal horror atmosphere and Romanian folklore theme gives the game a unique vibe which looks quite compelling. There are many isometric action games out there, but only this one lets you cut through your foes with the jagged teeth of a hellish duck. More info about Moroi is set to be revealed when it releases on PC in early 2025.
