First look at the Magic: The Gathering X Final Fantasy set

Posted on February 21, 2025

No stranger to exciting collaborations, Magic: The Gathering is expanding its extensive lineup with a brand new Final Fantasy set, releasing later in the year.

With the series’ Universes Beyond sets that feature crossovers with other franchises outside of the original fantasy setting, such as Lord of the Rings, Assassin’s Creed and Doctor Who, the heroes, villains and creatures of the Final Fantasy universes will fit right in with the eclectic roster of cards. At this point with all these incredible crossovers, Magic: The Gathering is starting to feel like the Fortnite of trading card games, and I’m here for it.

The Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy set will feature cards based on all sixteen mainline Final Fantasy games, making it the largest collection of Final Fantasy artwork in a single game. No matter what kind of Final Fantasy fan you are, it has something for you.

Are you a longtime fan looking for a throwback to the classics? You’re covered. Cecil from Final Fantasy IV is represented with a double-faced card that captures his transformation from Dark Knight to Paladin. Maybe your only exposure to Final Fantasy is the MMO, Final Fantasy XIV? There’s something for you, with a whole commander deck lead by the game’s beloved miqo’te sorceress, Y’shtola.

If you’re more into the newer entries, there’s plenty from Final Fantasy XV for you! Most notably, at the moment, is another double-faced card of Noctis fishing up something for Ignis to cook! Unfortunately, Final Fantasy XVI cards haven’t been shown off just yet. Regardless, there’s bound to be plenty for XVI fans to look forward to as more is revealed.

The set also introduces some special mechanics, with most being yet to be announced. What has been shown, however, is the return of double-faced cards, like the aforementioned Cecil and FFXV cards. When certain conditions are met, they can be flipped over and transformed into something new! These double-faced cards bring iconic Final Fantasy story moments, minigames and characters to life. Also confirmed is the introduction of Saga Creatures, which brings classic Final Fantasy summons into your games. Shiva has already been revealed, with more summons expected to follow.
