Onimusha returns, with both a new look, and a familiar face.

Posted on February 5, 2025

Last year, during The Game Awards 2024, Capcom announced that a new Onimusha is being developed, releasing in 2026. A developer message released earlier today has detailed what to expect from this new title, which will be called Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Capcom also surprised fans by revealing a remaster of Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, which will release later this year.

Onimusha is a beloved action game franchise from Capcom that has fallen into obscurity in recent console generations. The last mainline title, Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, released in 2006. While the first title, Onimusha: Warlords, was remastered in 2019, the lack of news in following years suggested the series would remain dormant. With Way of the Sword being the first mainline Onimusha in twenty years, fans are curious to see how Capcom will modernise this iconic action series.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is still very far from release, so Capcom isn’t showing off too much yet. Today’s message from producer Akihito Kadowaki and director Satoru Nihei details the developer’s goals for this new entry in the franchise. In the message, Kadowaki expresses the three core aspects focused on in Way of the Sword; compelling characters and enemies, the Kyoto setting, and “the ultimate sword fighting action.

Nihei breaks these aspects down further. He reveals that Way of the Sword will feature a new protagonist. He will take on the role of Onimusha and search for his reason to fight against the demonic Genma. Way of the Sword is set during Japan’s Edo period, a jump forward for the franchise, as past titles were set during the 16th century. Players can expect to explore historic locations and real life figures across Kyoto during this new period. The trailer didn’t discuss the new combat features in depth, but a simple glance at the announcement trailer shows Capcom are using their past two decades of experience to make combat more intense, cinematic and flowing. Fans should keep an eye on the games official website for more details coming soon.

Capcom snuck in a surprise announcement for Onimusha fans during the presentation. The second Onimusha, Samurai’s Destiny, is receiving a remaster releasing later this year! This remaster will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Steam & Nintendo Switch. Its possible Capcom will reveal remasters of the third and fourth Onimusha titles within the next year, to build up traction for Way of the Sword.

With Onimusha: Warlords currently on sale and Onimusha 2 coming soon, now is the perfect time to get into the franchise. Onimusha: Way of the Sword will release sometime in 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S & PC via Steam.
