Samurai Pizza Cats: Blast from the Past brings back the cult classic anime

Posted on February 21, 2025

Fans of ‘90s anime and cartoons are over the moon today because of the announcement of Samurai Pizza Cats: Blast from the Past, a 2D action RPG developed by BLAST ZERO and published by Red Dunes Games. The game is set to release in 2026 on all major platforms, with Steam wishlisting available now.

Samurai Pizza Cats: Blast from the Past clearly aims to capture the spirit of the source material, featuring a hand-drawn, cel-shaded art style that mimics the ‘90s aesthetic. Players can switch between the three main characters, Speedy Cerviche, Polly Esther, and Guido Anchovy, to solve puzzles, battle enemies, and traverse platforming challenges in the vibrant world of Little Tokyo.

BLAST ZERO, formed from the Tanuki Creative Studio team that developed Jitsu Squad, promises tag-team action, classic anime moves, and customisation in the upcoming action game.  Unleash powerful special moves that pay homage to the series’ over-the-top battle sequences and explore the world, defeat enemies, and collect special cards to enhance combat abilities.

Originally airing in Japan in 1990 under the title Kyatto Ninden Teyandee, Samurai Pizza Cats was a sci-fi action-comedy anime. The show followed three feline heroes and when they weren’t working at a pizza shop, they donned high-tech samurai armour to fight evil and protect the city from the scheming Seymour “The Big” Cheese. The series became a cult hit, especially in the West, thanks to its humour, over-the-top action, and it’s fantastic English dub.

In an exciting nod to fans, the trailer for Samurai Pizza Cats: Blast from the Past features voice actors from the original anime. If they are involved in the game, too, that means the English cast includes Rick Jones (Speedy Cerviche), Sonja Ball (Polly Esther), and Terrence Scammell (Guido Anchovy), with Dean Hagopian reprising his role as Seymour “The Big” Cheese. The Japanese cast features Kappei Yamaguchi, Ai Orikasa, and other returning talents, with Seiichiro Yamashita stepping in as Sukashii (Guido).

While details on console releases remain under wraps, the developers have confirmed that the game is being designed for “all major platforms.” Given the projected 2026 release, it’s likely we’ll get more information soon.
