Disco Elysium developer ZA/UM has revealed their newest game, Project C4. A brief teaser trailer showcases a series of artworks depicting bodies and minds ripped apart, accompanied by foreboding narration. ZA/UM describes C4 as “a mind-warping espionage RPG that blends player introspection, deep character-driven dialogue, and high-stakes encounters steered by dice rolls.”
A closed presentation led by ZA/UM developers Siim Kosmos Sinamäe and Jim Ashlevi provided more information on Project C4. The developers emphasise that Project C4 is not a direct sequel to Disco Elysium. Instead, Project C4 takes place in an entirely new world which focuses on the dark and dirty world of spies.
Espionage is the major theme of Project C4. The game will place the players in the role of a professional spy, although it’s not yet clear what this may entail. ZA/UM tells us to expect something akin to the thrills of Slow Horses, rather than the sexy action of 007. Influences range from espionage authors like John le Carré to the action thriller director Park Chan-wook.
Project C4 will challenge the players’ allegiances frequently. Expect conflict between your job and your allies, or morality versus responsibilities. One returning element from Disco Elysium is the gameplay style of failing forward. Like Disco, C4 will validate and progress the story forward on failed skill checks instead of purely punishing the player. ZA/UM cites failing forward as the most unique element of their games.
It’s hard to emphasise just how big the legacy of Disco Elysium will factor into C4’s reception. Disco Elysium was universally praised upon release and is commonly referred to as one of the best-written games ever. However, it’s no secret that ZA/UM has lost much of the foundational talent behind Disco Elysium since. With several studios now developing their own Disco Elysium successors, Project C4 will be facing a lot of competition.
ZA/UM will be releasing new information about Project C4 in the upcoming weeks.
