Compared to other countries like the United States or even entire nations like Europe, Australia does get the short end of the stick when it comes to gaming conventions. It’s even worse if you don’t live close enough to a major city. That’s why it’s great to hear that there’s a brand-new gaming festival here in Australia, called ALT: GAMES, taking place this weekend!
Hosted by Powerhouse, the largest museum group in Australia, it’s Sydney’s first major dedicated games festival. ALT: GAMES is celebrating innovation, diversity and culture through the power of play with gamers, developers and industry leaders all together.
It’s honestly great to see more and more gaming conventions and festivals here in Australia. Back in December of last year, a new study found that more Australians played video games than went to the movies or a concert. Not only that, but in 2023, the IGEA reported that over 80% of Australians play games. So, it really makes sense as to why there should be more things like ALT: GAMES in Australia.
If you’re planning on going, you’ll experience cutting-edge digital showcases and hear some amazing speeches from those in the biz. It already sounds action-packed! Powerhouse has provided an online program here too, so you can organise who you want to see, or what you want to experience. ALT: GAMES highlights how impactful games are, with them used for connection, education, and learning about different cultures and experiences.
They also have a powerhouse of keynote speakers and developers. Folks like Richard Garfield, creator of Magic: The Gathering; Daniel Mullins, creator of Inscryption; and GUCK Studio, creators of Blaktasia will be there. There are, of course, many more amazing people at ALT: GAMES, you’ll just have to see for yourself. Powerhouse is doing some amazing things to get this festival on the ground, as well as promoting the ways that gaming can be diverse and innovative.
Chloe Appleby, Powerhouse Games Curator, mentioned that the festival itself is there to “support both the games industry and community, not only through the promotion of games but through fostering creativity and connection”. Lisa Havilah, Powerhouse’s Chief Executive, said that the festival will capture the “undeniable level of engagement that our communities have with games and the distinctive voices that are emerging from across Australia”.
ALT: GAMES is located at PHIVE, Parramatta Town Hall and Parramatta Square this weekend, April 12th and 13th. It’s also free to attend, but you’ll need to register online if you wish to go. There are also bookable sessions with some of the game devs, but get in quick, as some are already sold out! Check out ALT: GAMES in Parramatta.
