Summerfall Studios, the Aussie team behind the award-winning Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical, has announced its next project, Malys. Completely different from their previous work, Malys is a roguelite deckbuilder set for release in 2025.
In Malys, you’ll exact vengeance against demons as you protect the innocent. Playing as Noah, a former priest now acting as a demon hunter, your goal is to take down the titular Malys, a powerful demon whose evil influence is corrupting a city. Noah must expel the evil he comes across, confront his past, forge shaky alliances, and uncover the truth no matter what it is. You’ll use your deck to battle against evil, learning with each attempt as you figure out the most effective strategies.
Promising “a unique take on a familiar genre”, Malys brings Summerfall Studios’ storytelling charm by introducing a satisfying yet unsettling experience. Written by David Gaider (former BioWare Lead Writer on the Dragon Age series and Creative Director on Stray Gods), there will be times when you are unable to free the possessed citizens or fail in your mission. Any uncomfortable truth about your past may shake your resolve. But Noah still presses on, as Malys must be stopped, no matter the cost.
“Summerfall Studios is built on finding ways to tell innovative stories, big and small, and Malys is no exception. With a heavy emphasis on immersive and strategic play, Malys is a unique experience within the genre,” says Liam Esler, Managing Director of Summerfall Studios. “We can’t wait to show players what we’ve been working on for the past year, but as we reach the finish line, we know the project will hugely benefit from some additional love as well as our community’s help.”
The team is launching a Kickstarter campaign, which, according to the press release, “will enable Summerfall to work closely with their community to make the Malys the best game it can be, giving the team additional development time and opening themselves up to unique opportunities for communication and collaboration.”
Given the talent involved in this local studio and the success of Stray Gods, we’re certainly excited to see how Malys turns out.
