We’ve known for a while that Hazelight’s Split Fiction has a movie in its early stages underway, but details have been pretty sparse… until now. It’s been revealed, first reported by Variety, that Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria’s Cassie Howard, Anyone but You’s Beatrice, Immaculate’s Cecilia) is officially set to lead the upcoming adaptation.
The specific role Sweeney is set to play has not been specified. However, if I had to take an educated stab in the dark, I’d bet on Zoe, the blonde high fantasy writer, as opposed to Mio, her rougher, sci-fi writing counterpart.
This marks another big project for Sweeney, with it also being her second video game-related adaptation in the works. She’s also currently teaming up with Michael Bay on a film based on Sega’s OutRun franchise. Bay is set to direct and produce this OutRun adaptation, with Sweeney herself also taking on a producing role.
As for Split Fiction, we’ve learned that Jon M. Chu, best known for Crazy Rich Asians and Wicked, is locked in as director. The film is being produced by Story Kitchen, with Sweeney herself expected to also co-produce.
With video game films continuing to surge in popularity, from the massive successes of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 to the buzz around the recent Minecraft movie, Split Fiction is simply another video game adaptation hoping to swim, rather than sink. Gamers can be harsh critics. With Jon M. Chu’s proven directorial flair and Sydney Sweeney leading, though, Split Fiction is hopefully in good hands.
