Microsoft has announced that Gears of War: Reloaded, an updated remaster of the 2006 Xbox 360 original, is heading to modern platforms later this year. This remaster is being developed by series developer The Coalition in partnership with Sumo Interactive and Disbelief. Players can expect improved visuals and performance in both the single player campaign and multiplayer modes, cross-play and cross-progression, as well as bundling all the DLC provided in Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. What’s more, in keeping with Microsoft’s recent strategy of allowing franchises which were previously Xbox or Windows exclusives to release on other platforms, Gears of War: Reloaded will be heading to PlayStation 5 as well as Xbox Series X/S and PC.
Gears of War: Reloaded will include “immediate access to all post-launch downloadable content at no additional cost“. This includes the bonus Campaign act, all multiplayer maps and modes, as well as cosmetics and playable characters. The game will come with a substantial suite of graphical and performance improvements. The list of enhancements includes:
- 4K resolution
- 60 FPS in Campaign
- 120 FPS in Multiplayer
- High Dynamic Range (HDR)
- Dolby Vision & 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos
- 7.1.4 3D Spatial Audio
- Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
- 4K assets and remastered textures
- Enhanced post-processing visual effects
- Improved shadows and reflections
- Super resolution with improved anti-aliasing
- Zero loading screens during Campaign
“As we approach the 20th anniversary of Gears of War in 2026, we’re reflecting on what this franchise means,” writes Mike Crump, Studio Head of The Coalition in an announcement post. “It’s about the stories we’ve told, the friendships we’ve built, and the unforgettable moments we’ve shared together. With Gears of War: Reloaded, we’re opening that door to more players than ever”. In addition to the series making its PlayStation debut, Gears of War will include both cross-play multiplayer and cross-progression, allowing Xbox, PlayStation and PC players to play together online, and for players to carry their campaign progress from one platform to another. It requires mentioning that full cross-platform functionality requires you to sign in with a Microsoft account.
Gears of War has been a highly influential franchise in Microsoft’s stable, with five mainline instalments and multiple spin-offs. The next new entry in the series, a prequel named Gears of War: E-Day, was announced last year and is set to release next year. Gears of War: Reloaded will be landing on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC on the 26th of August 2025, including via Game Pass. Notably, if you have already purchased Gears of War: Ultimate Edition before this announcement, Gears of War: Reloaded will be a free upgrade.
