“We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.”

It goes on to add: “With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve. We look forward to sharing more information with you soon.”

This leaves the back half of 2025 wide open, as it’s been previously reported that game publishers and developers were avoiding announcing release dates, in fear of being overshadowed by what has to be one of the most anticipated video game releases in history. Now, with May 26 2026 locked in as a release date, that leaves the rest of the year in an interesting place, and leaves the potential “Game of the Year” conversation wide open… perhaps for an exciting newcomer or two?

Either way, we’re still waiting to learn a lot more about GTA 6, and with another 12 months ahead of us, it’s only a matter of time before we get more thrilling details. More polish can only be a good thing, and Rockstar Games is certainly known for their exceptional quality. In the meantime, why not find out why GTA Online is still so much bloody fun?
