Hollow Knight: Silksong, Team Cherry’s highly anticipated sequel to its hit 2017 platformer Hollow Knight, finally has a sort-of release date following frequent delays. Despite not having an actual release date yet, we do know when a version of the game will be playable at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, or ACMI, in Melbourne, potentially suggesting a release date for the actual game may be around the corner.
Hollow Knight: Silksong, along with many other games, will be playable at ACMI’s upcoming new exhibition called Game Worlds. In a comment to IGN, ACMI co-curators Bethan Johnson and Jini Maxwell have stated that “since Hollow Knight: Silksong’s initial announcement in 2019, it has been one of the most anticipated indie games on the planet – and we are thrilled to celebrate the design of this South Australian-made game as a centrepiece of Game Worlds in September.”
The Silksong display in the Game Worlds exhibition at ACMI will delve into “the hundreds of sprites that animate Hornet’s different movements and attacks, to the logic behind the game’s most challenging boss fights“, along with having a playable version of the game available for visitors. Game Worlds will also feature 29 other video games, including the likes of World of Warcraft and The Sims. Visitors can view original design materials, concept art and playable builds. Game Worlds will commence at ACMI on September 18th 2025.
What does this mean for when Hollow Knight: Silksong will actually come out on home platforms? Not a whole lot, unfortunately; the game was originally set to release in 2023 before an indefinite delay. As of the Nintendo Switch 2’s release date presentation, it was confirmed that the game will release sometime in 2025, and will be coming out on both the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 platforms (as well as PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S). While the announcement of a playable version at ACMI in September doesn’t necessarily indicate a narrower release window, it is hopefully suggestive that we will get some sort of confirmation of when we can expect to play it at home soon.
