Larian Studios reveals formation of new storytelling department

Posted on May 5, 2025

Larian Studios, the developers behind the award-winning Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3), have announced the formation of a brand-new department dedicated entirely to storytelling. With the final major update for BG3 now complete and released, it’s clear the studio is shifting its focus to new projects

Storytelling has always been a key part of Larian’s identity. Long before Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian launched Divine Divinity in 2002. Divine Divinity kickstarted the beginning of their Divinity series, which now spans seven games and firmly established Larian’s reputation for creating large, narrative-rich CRPGs. Given this legacy, the formation of a dedicated storytelling team feels like a natural evolution. Personally, I’m surprised they didn’t have a dedicated storytelling group in the first place, especially considering the scope of BG3’s story.

In an interview with GameSpot, Larian’s founder Sven Vincke touched on this new department, explaining that the group will be developing narratives not just for a singular project, but also for a backlog of stories ahead of time to ensure the team has strong material ready to draw from. Makes sense, considering that to close up the interview, Vincke spoke about how Larian Studios is ambitiously attempting to craft multiple RPGs simultaneously. He highlighted that this process is aiming to avoid idle downtime where groups in their pipeline are left waiting on each other, and hopes he can talk about the success of this process five years down the line. We’ll be seeing you in 2030, Swen Vincke.

Larian Studios. Divinity heroes

As a fan of both Baldur’s Gate 3 and the Divinity series’ narratives, it’s reassuring to see Larian Studios doubling down on the importance of a strong story-writing team. As they move beyond the Baldur’s Gate universe into whatever projects they’re cooking up side by side, their commitment to deep worldbuilding and impactful storytelling will make a five-year check-up on their new projects all the more exciting.
