Hangar 13 and 2K have just unveiled the first gameplay trailer for Mafia: The Old Country, alongside a developer insight video as well as a release date, and let’s just say the hype is real.
Mafia: The Old Country is the first new instalment for the franchise in nearly ten years, and plans to bring the franchise back to its roots, set in 1900s Sicily, the birthplace of the real-life crime organisation.
Mafia: The Old Country is a story-driven linear crime-drama that will see players taking on the life of Enzo Favara, who grew up in the sulphur mines during a time when children were being sold to mine owners as labourers. After turning to a life of crime in an attempt to make a name for himself in a time when his life is seen as disposable, Enzo joins the Torrisi crime family.
The trailer showcases what we can expect in the upcoming release, such as fast-paced car and horse races, exciting gun fights, and the ever-important knife. The team states the knife is an integral part of gameplay, as well as an important part of Sicilian culture. With the knife, players will be able to assassinate people Assassin’s Creed style, while also using it in face-on knife fights. Both gun fights and knife fights are said to feel more immersive and like life-or-death situations, so the stakes will always be high.
The Sicilian setting looks beautiful, with Mafia: The Old Country being the first game in the franchise to be developed within Unreal Engine 5. The team talk about the importance of getting this setting right in the developer insight video, as doing justice to the history of the story itself is extremely important. “Our top goal for every Mafia game is to deliver the promise to a player that you’re going to play a classic Mob movie.”
Mafia: The Old Country will be coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on August 8, 2025.
