Announced at the Six One Indie showcase, Truth Scrapper is a brand new romantic mystery visual novel from insertdisc5, the developer of time-loop RPG In Stars and Time. What was teased is an exciting-looking enigma of a game, featuring unreliable memories from the protagonist and a pair of gorgeous individuals fighting for your attention.
Players control Sosette, a member of the Truth Scrapper guild who is sent to investigate a series of attacks in a remote location known as the Dwell. You piece the story together from conversations with other guild members — victims of the attack — and record notes in your trusty magical notebook. The one catch? Your memory wipes every day, and all that’s left are the sparse notes you’ve left. I don’t know about you, but that’s a hell of a hook to be reeled in by.
Truth Scrapper has been in the works by insertdisc5 for over a year and is said to have three unique endings, each with ample hours of playtime. There’s fun in which of the two suitors you choose to pursue, the other becoming a distant memory in that playthrough. What I’m most taken by about the game thus far is the art style. Largely in black and white and depicted in multi-layered environments, you’re witnessing life-like environments that serve as a backdrop while characters and other key assets appear sort of stickered over the pre-rendered environments. It’s maybe a deep cut, but it’s an art style reminiscent of the heavily underrated indie detective game Tangle Tower. Images and colour are larger than life, used sparingly to emphasise character design or lush environmental details. It all leaps off the screen.
Truth Scrapper doesn’t yet have a release date or window, but it’s one mystery game fans should avidly anticipate for PC.
