Mundfish reveals Atomic Heart 2, alongside MMO spin-off

Posted on June 7, 2025

Developer Mundfish has revealed Atomic Heart 2, a sequel to Atomic Heart, the studio’s 2023 alternate-history FPS RPG, during the Summer Game Fest. In addition, there are further plans to expand the franchise, with an MMO spin-off set after the events of the first game called The Cube in the works.

Set to Queen music, Atomic Heart 2’s announcement trailer shows off some of what to expect from the game. According to the game’s Steam Store page, it promises events “on a global scale“, bringing the action beyond the borders of the retro-futuristic Soviet Union setting of its predecessor. The trailer is a bit ambiguous regarding what exactly the plot is about this time around and whether P-3, the first game’s protagonist, is returning. However, we can at least expect deeper RPG elements and the ability to dual-wield weapons and glove abilities, which is nice. Atomic Heart 2 does not yet have a release date or window, but can be Wishlisted on Steam if you would like to remainĀ  updated.

It wasn’t just a direct single-player follow-up to Atomic Heart that Mundfish wanted to announce. In addition to Atomic Heart 2, Mundfish announced the development of The Cube. An MMO set in the universe of Atomic Heart, The Cube promises a “living world full of memorable characters, diverse biomes, and tons of enemies, including powerful bosses“, as per the description in its Steam Store page. The announcement trailer shows different characters reacting to the mysterious gravity-defying massive cube hovering in the sky and causing strange and dangerous phenomena to occur. Players must explore the Cube and seek to solve its mysteries, either alone or in clan groups formed with other players. As with Atomic Heart 2, there is currently no release window for The Cube.

Mundfish appears to be developing both Atomic Heart 2 and The Cube simultaneously, which is a pretty big undertaking. The first game, while imperfect, showed a lot of promise in its interesting alternate history world-building. Whether you are looking for a single-player-focused RPG or a multiplayer outing, Mundfish plans to have an Atomic Heart follow-up released that will appeal to you.

Neither Atomic Heart 2 or The Cube yet have release dates, but will both be releasing on PC and consoles.
