In a surprise announcement, a new battalion of Helldivers will be joining the Galactic War on 26 August. That’s right, Helldivers 2 is launching onto Xbox Series consoles.
As early as the initial launch, Xbox players had been clamouring for Helldivers 2, something Game Director Mikael Eriksson acknowledged in the announcement: “We know gamers have been asking for this for some time and we are so excited to bring more Helldivers into our game”.
Helldivers 2 arrived to critical acclaim and had quite a moment in the zeitgeist. After facing the PSN link controversy, it has also managed to maintain high player counts over a year since its release. Impressive for any newer live service launch.
While developer Arrowhead is not owned by Sony, this will be one of the first PlayStation-published games to make its way to Xbox. The other exception is the baseball game MLB The Show. With Gears of War: Reloaded launching on the same day for the first time on PlayStation consoles, it’s clear the days of the console walled garden have thoroughly ended.
While I am a lapsed Helldiver, I can see this renewed infusion of players having an infectious quality, and potentially bringing me back to blast bugs, bots, and squids across the galactic front.
