The Legend of Zelda film has cast its Link and Zelda

Hey! Listen! Shigeru Miyamoto posting on behalf of Nintendo has announced two members of the main cast for the upcoming live-action Legend of Zelda movie coming out in 2027. Rather than featuring a star-studded cast, as Nintendo approached its Pokémon: Detective Pikachu and Super Mario Bros movies, this upcoming project will feature more lesser-known actors as its leads. Link will be portrayed by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, and Princess Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason.

In the post announcing the casting for the Legend of Zelda movie, Miyamoto advised that he is “very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen“. In terms of previous projects these actors have been involved in, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth is known for playing Miles in The Haunting of Bly Manor on Netflix, as well as voicing the titular character in Disney’s 2022 live-action remake of Pinocchio on Disney Plus. Bo Bragason has recently featured in the television series such as The Jetty and Renegade Nell.

It is interesting that Nintendo has resisted going for the likes of higher-profile young actors for these parts (Tom Holland and Hunter Schafer have been popular online fan-casts for Link and Zelda respectively). However, is not uncommon for studios producing movies based on well-known franchises, particularly superhero comics, to go with lesser-known actors and trusting that the brand will be able to market the movie without needing a well-known actor on the poster.

Mind, these are the only two actors who have been publicly cast in The Legend of Zelda movie; it is unclear who the antagonist will be (and if it’s Ganon, who will portray him). The movie is being distributed and co-financed by Sony Pictures Entertainment, with Avi Arad serving as co-producer. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes director Wes Ball is directing the movie, with Jurassic World screenwriter Derek Connolly penning the screenplay.

At any rate, we have some time to go before the Legend of Zelda film is released. Previously announced to release on March 26th 2027, the film has since been delayed to May 7th 2027.
