Starfield, Bethesda’s open-world spacefaring RPG which you may or may not have comfortably assumed wasn’t getting any more support is in fact getting more DLC. As per a developer update, Starfield is indeed set to receive more DLC after last year’s Shattered Space expansion, along with changes to its divisive space travel intended to make it more immersive and rewarding.
In a Developer Spotlight video on YouTube, Lead Creative Producer Tim Lamb announces new details regarding what we can expect in the future for Starfield. “We have some exciting things in development, including free updates and player-requested features, as well as a new DLC story,” he states, acknowledging that the game will be getting more than one expansion.
Regarding what these updates and player-requested features might entail, they appear to be focused around Starfield’s space travel system. The space travel as it is implemented in Starfield is among the game’s most divisive features, featuring an immense, largely procedurally-generated galaxy of planets and moons that is rather laborious to travel through. Consequently, the player is virtually required to use fast travel, making Starfield’s field of stars ultimately feel rather small.
“I can’t share all the details yet, but part of the team is focusing on space gameplay to make the journeys more rewarding,” advises Lamb in the video. “We’re also adding new game systems and some smaller surprises. Plus, there’s some exciting content coming from our Verified Creators.”
Will these updates be enough to bring Bethesda fans back to Starfield? With the game’s only major expansion so far being quite unpopular and many of its players having moved onto Oblivion Remastered, Starfield has a lot of goodwill to win back. That said, if the space travelĀ couldĀ be made more rewarding, it would go a long way towards making its huge galaxy feel as immersive as Bethesda’s other memorable sandboxes on which the studio has built its reputation. We will have to wait and see what the future has in store for Starfield as Bethesda continues to work on future updates.
