It’s pretty rare to see devs come out and tell people to pirate their game. With the devs in question being none other than Aggro Crab, the makers of Going Under, Another Crab’s Treasure and Peak, their latest game and the one everyone’s talking about. Roblox and rip-offs kind of go hand in hand; there are even a few video essays on YouTube about the topic.
And it’s pretty easy to click through some of the games that people are making that are based on other games or IP. Supermarket Simulator is Supermarket Together, and Squid Games is Ink Game. Though sometimes you might get companies that work with Roblox, like Sonic Speed Simulator, a collaboration between Sega and Gamefam. A lot of companies don’t really take action against the knock-offs, as they see it as free advertising. Others, like Nintendo, will get games taken down if they infringe on their IP, such as Pokémon: Brick Bronze.
That’s when we get games like Peak that become popular with streamers and friends alike, and people decide that they’d like to make their own version! Thus, Roblox fans can play “We’ve got Peak at home” by playing Cliff (or even a similar version, Climb). The two games are strikingly similar, same artwork, same plot, same fun to be had with friends. The description even notes that Peak is an inspiration, but there’s a difference between being inspired by and just blatantly copying, right down to starting in an airport.
However, Aggro Crab noticed these similarities too and tweeted “tbh would rather you pirate our game than play this microtransaction-riddled Roblox slop ripoff”. While the concept of physics-based climbing games isn’t something Aggro Crab invented, they’re all a little bit different from one another. But, as noted by Eurogamer, if you showed both games to someone who has never played either, they “would think they are the same game”.
One of the major things about Roblox is how many kids play it. So creating a Roblox version of a popular game is, arguably, accessible in a way. Peak is only available on PC, whereas Roblox is available on PC, console, tablets and mobile phones. One person even replied to Aggro Crab’s tweet asking if there’ll be a console version, with Aggro Crab replying that they want to. That and Peak cost money, whereas initially, Cliff doesn’t.
Though Polygon does mention that there are microtransactions, such as stamina improvement and an in-game pet. And to be honest, you might as well just buy Peak instead.
