Aussie indie co-op horror game Macabre looks scarily good

Posted on September 4, 2025

Macabre is an upcoming co-op stealth extraction horror game with a distinctly Australian twist. Developed by a local Aussie-based indie studio, Weforge Studio, Macabre will see groups of up to four players (or solo, if you’re brave enough) exploring procedural maps with constantly changing threats as you loot, scavenge and extract rare resources before the Rift collapses.

Macabre will see players guided by Banjo, the mysterious but classically Australian narrator, to fight and survive in unstable dimensional rifts where each play session is different from the last. With dynamic weather, shifting objects, procedural maps, and constantly changing dangers, Macabre seeks to keep things fresh and fun. The plan is to continue adding even more monsters, maps and mechanics as guided by player feedback through the Early Access stage.

It looks like there’s going to be a lot of character customisation as well, with players in the trailer sporting classic Aussie attire such as Akubra hats and wearing cockatoos and kookaburras on their shoulders. The landscape also seems pretty Australian, with signs you’d see on roads telling you to watch out for kangaroos, as well as eucalyptus trees everywhere. It’s really fun to see a game like this lean into its home turf, and I can’t wait to find all the little bits of Aussie life they’ve added.

During the most recent Steam Next Fest, the demo for Macabre ranked in the top 50 most-played titles, showing just how keen people are for a new co-op horror experience. It’s always great to see such love for our homegrown games, and with Weforge only being a small team of three (plus some freelancers), it’ll be awesome to keep an eye on the way this game grows through its Early Access stage and into full release.

Macabre will be launching into Early Access on Steam on the 29th of September.
