Hollow Knight: Silksong launch crashes global game stores

Posted on September 5, 2025

After seven long years of waiting, Hollow Knight: Silksong has finally arrived, and it’s already rewriting records. The sequel from Adelaide’s Team Cherry was so hotly anticipated that it crashed digital stores worldwide. Nintendo’s eShop went offline, Steam threw up error messages, and PlayStation and Xbox players struggled to even download the game.

The hype isn’t surprising. The original Hollow Knight, created by Ari Gibson, William Pellen and Jack Vine with composer Christopher Larkin, sold over 15 million copies and became a global indie success story. Team Cherry’s haunting bug-filled world proved a local team could take on the giants.

Silksong began life as a planned expansion but grew into a full sequel starring Hornet, a fan-favourite character from the first game. The studio kept mostly quiet during development. Two weeks ago, they stunned us all by announcing a sudden release date for 4 September 2025, and we’ve been scrambling ever since.

On Steam, Silksong quickly became one of the platform’s Top 20 biggest launches ever and the most wishlisted game of 2025, with nearly five million players waiting to jump in. Other studios even delayed their own titles to avoid being steamrolled by the launch.

Now that players finally have the game in their hands, the buzz is only set to grow. Team Cherry’s work will also be showcased at ACMI’s Game Worlds exhibition in Melbourne from 18 September, cementing Silksong’s place in Australia’s video game culture.

Hollow Knight: Silksong is now available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The game is also available as a day one Game Pass release.
