Checkpoint Intimates: The Community Conversation

Posted on May 12, 2018

Listen to the show!

Checkpoint Intimates is a weekly podcast where two members of the team go one-on-one on a topic that they both feel strongly about, talking in a more deeper and, yes, intimate context. This week, Elliot and Kolby are here to discuss the idea of managing community expectations in video games. Specifically, when gamers (who are an impatient bunch sometimes) are anticipating a new title or update for a key franchise, what role does the developer play in communicating with fans to ensure they’re not disappointed? Do you build hype and potentially mislead the community about how amazing your game is (like No Man’s Sky) or do you keep things grounded to ensure there is no disappointment when something eventually releases? Do you update your community frequently with progress updates throughout development or do you stay tight lipped and only reveal something when there is something big to reveal (like Fallout 4)? What happens when you run into problems throughout development? Do you keep your community in the loop and stay honest or do you pretend like nothing is wrong and keep people guessing?
