Checkpoint Intimates is a weekly podcast where two members of the team go one-on-one on a topic that they both feel strongly about, talking in a more deeper and, yes, intimate context. This week, Elliot and Jake are here to talk all about when video games have an embedded precursor – or rather, when an old-school game is embedded within a new game. We do love our nostalgia in the video game industry, and with some developers having made titles for decades, there’s a lot of classics that they can throw back to where possible to hit those retro buttons. The original Wolfenstein can be played within the newest 2 games during a dream sequence, Super Mario Odyssey has sequences of old-school ​littered throughout and even Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End has the original Crash Bandicoot playable as part of the narrative. When are these references done well?
