Niantic to release Ingress Prime in 2018

Posted on December 5, 2017

Niantic, the developers of Pokemon GO, have announced a follow up to their original game, Ingress. The next generation of Ingress, dubbed Ingress Prime, is currently in development and will build upon its Science-Fiction Augmented Reality (AR) experience.

Ingress is a location-based augmented reality game on iOS and Android devices

Ingress is an Augmented Reality science-fiction mobile game with an open narrative. Players pick one of two factions and attempt to capture portals at real-world landmarks, then link them to virtual control fields over geographical areas. Players progress by capturing, linking, and recharging their portals whilst destroying enemy portals. The resulting changes reflect upon the factions, with no individual scoring or penalties for lost portals.

Players of the original Ingress can expect a redesigned user interface and completely new sound design. New features will integrate smartphone cameras and advanced AR technology to deliver an in-depth and immersive new experience to players. Ingress Prime will begin a large and entirely new story arc and bring a new narrative to players. The global game board will be reset as part of the new storyline, but current players will retain their current progression and items in Ingress Prime.

Ingress incorporates real-world geographical locations into its narrative using portals and missions

Recently, Niantic also revealed plans for a new Augmented Reality game based upon the Harry Potter franchise. In addition, Ingress Prime will be available for iOS and Android mobile devices in 2018. In the meantime, players can still access the original Ingress and sign up for Ingress Prime on their website.
