Sega’s Sonic returns

Posted on May 7, 2017

It’s safe to say that the new millennium has been tough for Sonic. For those of us that grew up in the 90’s, it’s akin to your favourite band releasing a string of average albums in succession. You buy them, try to like them even, but deep down you know the magic is gone.

This year Sega intend to release TWO new Sonic games, Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces, both slated for the end of the year.

Sonic Mania is designed as a return to the series’ 2D roots. Featuring classic gameplay and levels interspersed with re-imaginings. When the game was announced mid 2016 it was described as a passion project by Sonic Team head, Takashi Iizuka.  As the below gameplay video shows, it is coming along nicely.

Sonic Forces is set to feature gameplay similar to Sonic Generations where you alternate between ‘Classic Sonic’ 2D levels and ‘Modern Sonic’ 3D, third person levels. The first gameplay reveal video showed modern Sonic running his way through a burning city. Sega have recently revealed gameplay footage of one of the ‘Classic Sonic’ levels.

Will this be a double album comeback? Or will it be a greatest hits set and tour? Comment below with your thoughts about Sonic’s upcoming adventures.

Both games are set for release on PS4/Xbox One/Nintendo Switch/PC later this year.
