Super Mario Maker 2 gets an official release date

Posted on April 26, 2019

The first Super Mario Maker released back in 2015 for the Wii U and 2016 for the 3DS and was praised greatly for the various mechanics and level building tools on offer, so it was no surprise that a sequel would eventually be announced.

Super Mario Maker 2 was first announced earlier this year during Nintendo’s February Direct and understandably had fans all over the world excited, and also guessing as there was no release date provided. You can read more about the original reveal and new features that will be included here.

Luckily, fans can now rest a little easier as Nintendo has confirmed that Super Mario Maker 2 will officially release on the 28th of June 2019, meaning we do not have very long to wait at all before we can get out hands on it.

The first Super Mario Maker was touted as being a welcome addition to the Mario universe and offered all forms of creativity and level building that fans previously could only ever dream of having. One of the only major drawbacks for this title was that it was released on the Wii U, a console that would go on to be one of Nintendo’s biggest misfires and lowest selling consoles.

Unfortunately, this meant that only dedicated fans or people who had purchased a Wii U had the chance to play the original, which was only a small portion of the gaming community as evident by the consoles meager 13.56 million units sold during its lifetime. Thankfully Super Mario Maker 2 will release on the Switch, which means a vastly superior amount of people will now be able to create their own Mario levels and should see both old school gamers and new generation gamers enjoy the title.

It remains to be seen just how well Super Mario Maker 2 will perform, but if the Nintendo Switch’s continued success and the reception of the original is anything to go by then I can only imagine it being another first party success for Nintendo.
