Marvel’s Spider-Man becomes best selling superhero game in the US

Marvel’s Spider-Man is a phenomenal game. We reviewed it incredibly favourably and rightly so, it explored so many wonderful ideas and story beats. Now, our beloved web slinging hero has reached new heights, only this time its in regards to the US charts. Just 10 months after PlayStation 4 exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man has released, it has become the best selling superhero game of all time in the US. Yes, the game that was also previously the fastest selling of its superhero genre is also now the one with the most units. It surpasses Batman Arkham City, which released in 2011.

This is a pretty spectacular feat when you consider it. Arkham City has been out for some eight years and on multiple platforms too, compared to Spider-Man’s singular PlayStation 4 release. This information came from Mat Piscatella, a US video games analyst ahead of the San Diego Comic Con. In his Tweet a list of the top ten superhero video games were shown, and some of them may actually be surprising.

Predictably, each of the Arkham games made the cut but its interesting that two LEGO games did as well. While those are always big sellers they’re not exactly giants when it comes to the superhero genre. More so, where the hell is the PlayStation 1 Spider-Man game? That game’s amazing.

With Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 just being released and Square Enix’s Avengers game to come in March, it’ll be interesting to see if this list will change in the months to come. For now good old spidey, and the game’s developer Insomniac, will have some downtime to celebrate.
