Marvel’s Avengers confirmed for PS5, Xbox Series X with free upgrade

Square Enix have announced that anticipated superhero romp Marvel’s Avengers will be available on PS5 and Xbox Series X when the consoles launch during Holiday 2020.

Players who own the current-gen version of the game will be able to upgrade to the next-gen version at no additional cost, regardless if players are moving from PS4 to PS5 or from Xbox One to Xbox Series X. Those moving their saves to next-gen will transfer their player profiles and progression so they can pick up right where they left off.

Considering the cooperative nature of the game, cross-gen play will also be supported so that players from the current generation can play Marvel’s Avengers with their friends who choose to upgrade.

The PS5 version will reportedly be seamless and dynamic, fully utilizing the ultra-high speed SSD, the PS5 DualSense advanced haptics, and immersive spatial audio. PS5 will also provide players with their choice of Enhanced Graphics Mode or High Framerate mode. There will be more details to share on Xbox Series X and PC specific features at a later time, but we anticipate a similar jump in quality for those willing to wait for the next gen versions.

The GPU and CPU improvements on PS5 are exciting, but even more exciting is the introduction of an ultra-high speed SSD with lightning fast load speeds.” says Gary Snethen, CTO at Crystal Dynamics over on the PlayStation Blog.

“This is a transformative improvement in consoles that will reduce load times down to one or two seconds and enable real-time streaming of massive worlds at ridiculously fast speeds. Without any optimization work, the loading and streaming of Marvel’s Avengers improved by an order of magnitude on PS5. When optimization is complete, loading content will be nearly instant, allowing players to seamlessly jump into missions anywhere in the game world. And as Iron Man flies through content-rich levels, higher resolution textures and mesh will stream in instantly, maintaining the highest possible quality all the way to the horizon.”

We had the chance to try out Marvel’s Avengers at PAX Australia 2019, and overall after around 20 minutes of play-time it seemed to be a fun adventure that captured the popular superhero group’s essence, with a variety of different gameplay mechanics depending on which character you play as.

We’re certainly curious to see how the finished product will turn out when it launches on September 4, 2020.
