After many rumours over many years, the Xbox Games Showcase early this morning ended with a bang, revealing that yes, Fable is coming to Xbox Series X.
It’s being heralded as a “new beginning” for the Fable franchise, developed by a new team at Playground Games, who are known for crafting compelling open worlds in the Forza Horizon series. A loved fantasy RPG is certainly a shift for the studio, but I have a lot of faith in their abilities. The studio has also been seen hiring developers with experience in making RPGs. Check out the trailer.
We see a fairy as they fly through a gorgeous magical forest, before getting eaten by a giant frog. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s very on-brand for the personality of the Fable games, but it would have been pretty wonderful if they showed a glimpse of gameplay as well, right?
Interestingly, being called “Fable” (as opposed to say, Fable 4), this raises the question of whether this is a sequel or if this is a ground-up remake of the original Fable that was released on Xbox back in 2004. The last time we saw the franchise was Fable 3 that released way back in 2010, so a return to the series is long overdue.
Lastly, it was noted that in the trailer during the Showcase, it listed “Xbox Series X and PC”, not Xbox One. Xbox have previously confirmed that all of their first-party games would be across both Xbox One and Xbox Series X for the first couple of years, so this could imply that this Fable isn’t something we’ll see until potentially 2022 – but that’s just speculation at this stage.
Either way, a Fable return is long rumoured, and it was a great way to finish off the event that gave me goosebumps. When more news on the title comes, be sure that we’ll be covering it right here on Checkpoint.
