The acclaimed singer/actor Jack Black has worked with Double Fine Productions on past titles such as Brutal Legend, and is now seemingly voicing a new character for the studio’s long-awaited sequel to the Psychonauts franchise. The announcement was made during the Xbox Games Showcase, revealing a bunch of new titles either made or optimized for Xbox Series X.
Psychonauts 2 has been in development for some time now and recently had its launch date pushed to the nebulous time frame of 2021. While the game is shaping up to be a fun time, the inclusion of a celebrity like Jack Black has generated additional excitement for the when the game finally releases. Judging by the trailer, the game has made a fair bit of progress since its last showing at the 2018 Game Awards and it looks to be making the game’s soundscape a primary focus. Psychonauts has always been a unique franchise that depicts the world in such a fantastical and quirky way, it makes sense for the music to sound just as quirky if not more so.
With Jack Black onboard with the project, known for such classic movies such as School of Rock and Tenacious; his unique style of music seems to be a match made in heaven for Psychonauts’ bombastic score. The game will be available on both Xbox One and Xbox Series X, with plans to also bring it to PC. Details regarding the hardware advantages of the latter two platforms have yet to be released, but we can assume improvements such as an increased native resolution and higher frame-rates are most likely on the table.
