Lords of the Fallen 2 has found its third developer team in the brand spanking new, CI Games affiliated studio, Hexworks. The game is a sequel to Lords of the Fallen, a 2014 CI Games action-RPG that saw players embody Harkyn on his mission to put an end to a demonic God’s power that threatens to take over the world.
The sequel was announced in 2014 with a 2017 release date, however, this was pushed back due to multiple developer changes. In 2014, it was in development with original team at Deck13, but they left the project in 2015. Defiant Studios took over in 2018, getting rid of all of Deck13’s work and beginning from scratch. Now, in 2020, CI Games have taken on the development in house with Hexworks.
What’s so exciting about this news is that Hexworks will be “dedicated explicitly” to Fantasy-Actions-RPGs. *Be still my little geek heart!* The studio, which is based in Barcelona and Bucharest, opened their doors in March and now have a team of around 25. Their staff are made up of people who have AAA game dev experience, but the studios is “embracing a bit more of an indie approach to development as opposed to larger studios….projects will focus on the high-quality craftsmanship of role-playing games.”
In a press release, Hexworks announced that the sequel will see a “shift from the original’s power fantasy to a dark fantasy.” This change has been “inspired by community feedback for the first game.” The studio is mixing up the combat, making it “more loyal to the challenging combat experience that the Souldborne and Souls-like communities enjoy.” They also revealed that there is a lot of excitement from the community surrounding this project; they have raised, from investors alone, 5.7 million Euros in the last week!
There is no release date yet for Lords of the Fallen 2, but it is targeted to release for PC and next gen consoles.
