Oddworld: Soulstorm reveals Abe as an unlikely hero yet again

Posted on September 18, 2020

During the PlayStation 5 showcase event yesterday a new gameplay trailer was revealed for the upcoming adventure, story driven title Oddworld: Soulstorm. Its been six years since the charming protagonist Abe has graced consoles with the remake of Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath entitled Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty! Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath in 2005 was the last original story players have been given about the famous Mudokon.

Oddworld: Soulstorm was announced back in 2017 with a reveal trailer released just a few months back. This is the first time we have been given actual gameplay footage of Soulstorm. It kicks off after Abe has rescued his people from Raptor Farms and sees Abe experience new environments in the Oddworld universe such as Gorge, Sorrow Valley, and Feeco Depot. As you can see from the below trailer, the environment compared to New ‘n’ Tasty! is more open, more bold and packed with a lot more exciting and new details!

Abe once again is on a mission to save his people, the Mudokons, from the evil grips of slave traders. The game is introducing crafting and a Scavenger’s Economy elements as Abe, in this adventure, needs to be more resourceful by crafting his own tools. He must also “loot, pickpocket, and search through lockers” to find resources so that he can craft supplies and weapons to help himself and his followers. Moral actions that Abe makes will also impact the narrative and Abe’s spiritual power. The intensity of this power will predict how many Mudokons trust Abe to lead them to freedom.

On the PlayStation Blog, Creative Director of Oddworld: Soulstorm, Lorne Lanning, discussed the new moralistic angle to the game: “Oddworld: Soulstorm… possess underlying philosophical dilemmas that are relevant to our complicated world, its societal pressures, and the struggles we endure in our efforts to survive our human condition.  And like all our games, our challenging philosophies are presented with a little humor and a lot of hope that if someone like Abe can spark change, so can you.”

Though Oddworld: Soulstorm does not have a release date yet, Lanning has said they will be revealing the date “very very soon.” The game will release exclusively on PS4 and PS5.
