4A Games’ post-apocalyptic FPS Metro Exodus is getting a big upgrade on PC. The developer has announced that, along with the planned ports for PS5 and Xbox Series X, a new Enhanced Edition is also coming out for high-end PCs. This upgrade will be free for existing owners of the PC version.
“We have built an all-new Fully Ray Traced Lighting Pipeline that brings a number of optimisations, upgrades, and new features to the Ray Traced Global Illumination and Emissive Lighting that we pioneered with the original release of Metro Exodus, as well as an upgraded implementation of our powerful Temporal Reconstruction technology to further boost resolution, visual detail and performance,” 4A Games writes in a blog post describing the upgrade. “And we’ve pushed these enhancements to the limit to take advantage of the latest Ray Tracing capable GPU hardware from Nvidia and AMD, to create the ultimate version for our PC enthusiast fans.”
The developers also describe some of the upgrades console players will see on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Both versions will be free for existing owners on PS4 and Xbox One respectively. On PS5 and Xbox Series X, players can expect 4K resolutions and ray-traced lighting, with a target of 1080p on Xbox Series S. There will also be FOV options, and Haptic Feedback features for the PS5 DualSense controller.
For Mac players, 4A Games has confirmed that Metro Exodus will release for that platform on the Apple Store, Steam and Epic Games Store next month. A Linux version will come out on Steam later this year as well.
This is not the first time a PC game received an overhaul alongside upgraded console ports; Bethesda did much the same back in 2016 with Skyrim: Special Edition. It sounds like fans of Metro Exodus have a lot to look forward to. Metro Exodus PC Enhanced Edition will release “later this Spring“. The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S ports do not yet have a confirmed release date.
