Pyra and Mythra are joining the roster of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

The first announcement of the latest Nintendo Direct is, predictably, a new fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The latest fighter to join the roster is Pyra/Mythra of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 fame. The reveal trailer shows off the duo’s transformation powers.

“Sorry, Rex. I couldn’t tell you…because I got an invitation to join Smash!” announces Pyra in the trailer. Rex himself is surprised that he was not picked for the roster despite being the protagonist of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. However, he may have played similarly to Shulk, and Pyra and Mythra seem to have some unique mechanics.

Their main unique feature is the ability to swap instantaneously between Pyra’s fire powers, and Mythra’s light-based abilities. The developers made an effort to remove many of the transforming characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, splitting duos like Zelda and Sheik, and Samus and Zero Suit Samus, into separate character slots. While some still have the ability to change forms, most notably the Pokemon Trainer’s Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard, it is still somewhat of a rarity in Ultimate’s cast.

For their Ultimate Smash attack, Pyra or Mythra team up with Rex to use Burning Sword or Sacred Arrow, their Stage IV Specials from their home game. The stage that comes with these new fighters is the back of Gramps/Azurda, where Rex lives at the start of the game. Nia, Tora, Zeke and their Blades, Rex’s allies from Xenoblade Chronicles 2, also appear on the stage.

No precise release date has been announced, but it has been confirmed that they will arrive in March. After Pyra and Mythra join the roster, there are still 2 more fighters remaining to be announced in Fighters Pass Vol. 2. Who knows who will be announced next?
