Night School Studio, the talented indie developers behind narrative titles such as Oxenfree and Afterparty, have announced that they’re joining the Netflix team. This news comes straight from Night School’s website where the team share their excitement as Netflix’s first in-house game development studios.
Back in July, we reported that Netflix was looking to build toward video games as a way to introduce new value into their distribution platform. It seems as though those plans have started to come to fruition and Night School are a fantastic developer to bring into the fold. Night School said it best themselves in the announcement when they said “Night School wants to stretch our narrative and design aspirations across distinctive, original games with heart. Netflix gives film, TV, and now game makers an unprecedented canvas to create and deliver excellent entertainment to millions of people. Our explorations in narrative gameplay and Netflix’s track record of supporting diverse storytellers was such a natural pairing”
“Of course, it’s a surreal honor to be the first games studio to join Netflix! Not only do we get to keep doing what we do, how we like to do it, but we get a front-row seat on the biggest entertainment platform in the world.”
Night School went on to say that Oxenfree II will continue to be developed, good news to those like myself who are huge fans of the original. Netflix also made a simultaneous announcement that you can find here. In their announcement, they say “We’re in the early stages of creating a great gaming experience for our members around the world.”
“We’re inspired by [Night School’s] bold mission to set a new bar for storytelling in games. Their commitment to artistic excellence and proven track record make them invaluable partners as we build out the creative capabilities and library of Netflix games together.”
“We’ll continue working with developers around the world and hiring the best talent in the industry to deliver a great collection of exclusive games designed for every kind of gamer and any level of play. Like our shows and films, these games will all be included as part of your Netflix membership — all with no ads and no in-app purchases. Stay tuned for more.”
