Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie and Sonic Frontiers shown off

Posted on December 10, 2021

Gotta post fast! As part of The Game Awards 2021, we now have our first look at the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie! I knew I had to share this news with you all, once I was done screeching with glee of course.

Behold the trailer below!

My God, it’s beautiful… *ahem* so, we have Sonic playing superhero, because really, who wouldn’t with those powers, plus the gorgeous debut of Tails and Knuckles, the latter of whom appears to be packing some flashy powers of his own! And is that the master emerald? Oh the hype could not be more real…

Couple that with Jim Carrey’s Robotnik taking on a lovely new unhinged appearance courtesy of the previous film’s conclusion, and we have the makings of a brilliant sequel so far. Dare I say the best gaming film sequel ever? I mean, there isn’t a lot of competition, but still…

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 characters

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 debuts in cinemas March 31st next year; I’ll be seeing it day one in my Sonic cosplay! No, I’m dead serious. I look adorable in it I’m told.

Breath of the Hedgehog

As if that wasn’t enough to raise my blood pressure, there’s more news! In addition to the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 trailer, we’ve also been treated to a newer look at the next Sonic title, now officially known as Sonic Frontiers!

We aren’t shown too much here, but from both this and the trailer’s official description, we can glean that Sonic Frontiers will be an open world title set on the Starfall Islands, and will feature a variety of different locales just like any good Sonic game should!

As for these mysterious new foes… your guess is as good as mine! I can’t help but think of the phantom ruby when I see all the purple, but we’ll have to wait if there’s any connection; note also the voice that calls out to Sonic early on. Could we be seeing a new character? Some leaks have suggested the inclusion of a “ghost girl” but that really couldn’t be more vague.

Whatever the case, the trailer evoked an almost Breath of the Wild sort of world, and if there’s any character who can make exploring that kind of environment fresh again, it’s the blue blur. And Tails. And Knuckles. And Shadow, Rouge, Silver… Let us play as the others again Sonic Team!

Sonic Frontiers is set to arrive in Holiday 2022 for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
